Honouring Pregnancy and Infant Loss in British Columbia This October

October marks the start of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. As a perinatal therapist who supports individuals and families through the grief of miscarriage, stillbirth, and infant loss—and as someone who has experienced pregnancy loss myself—this month is deeply personal and meaningful.

Understanding Pregnancy and Infant Loss in BC

Pregnancy and infant loss is more common than many people realize. In British Columbia and across Canada:

  • 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage, often within the first 12 weeks.

  • 1 in 125 pregnancies end in stillbirth, occurring after 20 weeks.

  • Neonatal death is the loss of a newborn within the first 28 days of life.

  • Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) can happen unexpectedly to infants under 12 months of age.

Each of these babies has a story and a family who loves them. Sadly, many families grieve in silence and isolation. Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month is an opportunity to share stories, challenge stigma, and honour the lives of babies gone too soon.

How to Get Involved in Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

There are many ways to participate in October and show support for families navigating loss:

1. Join the Butterfly Run BC

On October 4, 2025, the Butterfly Support Network is hosting the Butterfly Run at locations across BC. This annual event raises awareness and funds for pregnancy and infant loss support.➡️ Glacier Counselling will be participating in Nanaimo. Learn more and register on the Butterfly Support Network website here.

2. Participate in the #WaveOfLight on October 15

Each year on October 15, families around the world light candles at 7:00 PM local time to honour babies lost too soon. This global event, known as the Wave of Light, creates a beautiful circle of remembrance across time zones. In BC, the Pacific Perinatal Society is hosting an in-person gathering at Beacon Hill Park in Victoria. More info is available online here.

3. Hold Space and Listen

Supporting this month doesn’t always require attending events. Simply being open to hearing stories, learning about the impact of loss, and holding compassionate space for others makes a difference.

We will be sharing more about pregnancy and Infant Loss throughout the month of October on social media. Follow along to learn more and hear about upcoming events.
